Rosh Hashana, the autumn holiday on the Jewish calendar is near. Rosh Hashana is celebrated by going to the synagogue, refraining from doing work, using symbolism such as food to remind of us the holiday and spending time looking in. In keeping with the introspection theme there are things that you can consciously tap into to make that process easier.

Although not a new subject, by now, most people have heard of the connection between the mind and emotions. however, what seems to surprise many is just how closely connected the two are, and how they affect self improvement. Emotions dominate our actions whether we like it or not, even when we don't want them to. For many, the expression of emotions signifies weakness. Often people hold them in, rationalize or simulate emotions. Emotions or feelings will always be felt no matter what you do, therefore the old saying "bricks and stones can break my bones but words won't hurt' is quite untrue. The ability to keep emotions locked away is futile because it holds the rest of your body captive. Trying to replace a negative emotion with a positive doesn't really work. How many of you have lost a pet to either illness, old age, or just good old fashioned lack of care. Did replacing the pet with a new one REALLY make you replace the loss of a pet? You may say of course, or yes...However, you still remember the pets name, and you may call the next pet the same name or use any other of the numerous rituals used to remember the first pet. Now, imagine at your current level of life you have a fight with a loved one. That fight in turn ruins your whole day. You may be able to function during your day as if nothing is wrong, yet others notice that you are "off" a bit. The state of being "off" or ill tempered is a direct result to the fight you had. Imagine if everyday you go through this continuously is there enough money and or prestige in the world to make up for the way you feel? In today's society we have allowed ourselves to be bullies toward others and cruel, untruthful all in the name of "if we treat people well, they will just step on us" mentality. It will be true so long as people hold on to that belief. That belief is what proves you right when someone does ill treat you. You are prepared with your own negativity to get right back. It becomes a war of sorts. Many think there is no time to reflect on our perception of reality, and choose to push down the negative feelings They grow inside you and grow up and out even worse than what you started with. The biggest concern with those of us who ar involved in the quest for self improvement is how to eliminate the negativity completely. Mental health or self improvement is the ability to create a change for the best. Meditation, NLP, Huna, Silva Method, Reikki are just a few of the programs out there that help us get in touch with the feelings that are holding back our ability to change. Once we reach those areas in the deeper part of our mind, and FEEL the pain that we have been holding on to (by not releasing it or even acknowledging it) we will see noticeable change almost immediately. Being completely happy all of the time is close to impossible but you want to reach a point where you can look at your life and count many moments where you experience utter joy. When your reality is too overwhelming you can try this simple exercise to help shift your perception. First find a quiet place (if possible) but at least clear your mind. Tell the wandering thoughts to get out. Second take a deep breath. Third create a safe place to be in. A safe place may be a song, a physical activity, or an imaginary place in your mind. Being in a safe place gives your mind a time to rest from whatever negativity you are thinking. After your mind clears you may be tempted to stay in your safe place all of the time. That is not a good idea, the safe place is a tool to help you shift your negativity by helping you get immersed in a new thought process through a new action. After you leave your space you will have more energy and information to deal with the issues around you. To find out getting in touch with our feelings, search for the above mentioned programs and I am sure there are others to see what closely fits your style. Since computers allow us the ability to seek out information almost instantly, then the cost of mental health upkeep can be relatively low. Having a disability is difficult enough, there are a lot of learning and studying involved to find the best possible way to make your or your child's life comfortable. Many parents of children who have disabilities tend to research a lot and connect to the proper agencies. What if you are an adult, or a person who has lived a life with no disability and face becoming disabled? Where can you go to learn more? The internet is a wonderful research tool for that type of information, however, you may learn about these two resources: I.D.E.A. And the A.D.A. I.D.E. A. is an acronym for Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. This particular Act is pertinent to those individuals who have disabilities between the ages of birth to 21 years of age. The particulars of the Act include the right (afforded by the US Constitution) meaning it is Federal Law, to ensure States provide education services (or Early Intervention) to people who have disabilities in 13 specific disability categories. The two main goals of the Act is to ensure that children who have disabilities are taught life skills thus ensuring their ability to work, further their education, and live an independent life. And two, to make sure that a free education is available and designed to meet the needs of students who have disabilities. This law is specifically for organizations that receive federal money to support their programs. The A.D.A. Is an acronym for the American Disabilities Act. This Act disallows employers to discriminate against an employee or even a potential employee due to disability. This Act is applicable to private sector, State and Municipal jobs. Other areas of interest included in this Act are communications, public transportation, and the United States Congress. In addition to the above mentioned laws there are laws that prohibit against housing discrimination, provide the right to vote, provide the right to all other human rights. Remember these are all applicable if you live independently or within a facility. Ignorance of laws is not an excuse, and by you searching out the proper places to get help you can provide yourself and others who may have a disability with the safety they require. Gaining the knowledge is only part of the equation, seeking out others who may be able to help you is the other part and lastly making the general public aware is the last part of this equation. The United States constitution was created to remind us of the rights we have been given by God, and created laws to make sure no one infringes upon those rights. As citizens of the United States you must be vigilant in seeking out the knowledge to protect your rights so that you may live a better life, but in addition to make sure all citizens continue to be protected regardless of age, race and religion thus creating a tolerant society for all. Telecommuting can be defined as working from the comfort of your home. Your employer may be situated miles away from you. Work duties can be accomplished by telephone, fax, and computer. In light of the technological advances that have been made it seems that this is vey underutilized way of working. There are employers however, who do offer telecommuting as an option you do have to search for them, and usually you may be subjected to some requirements in order to be admitted. Telecommuting opportunites have been available for a long time especially in areas of medical and legal transription. Those jobs basicly entail you to transcribe audio files that will be sent to you from your employer. The files are usually recorded by doctors or lawyers and they need a "hard" copy or written form of what was said. The job usually pays per line of typed information that you hear. One audio file can be any where from 15 pages of typed material which would be the equivalent of one hour and half of work. The main requirement for these types of jobs would be to get trained in transcription. There are course on line and off line that could be of assistance. In addition you may need to be familiar with medical and or legal terms to assist you in your transcription. In more recent years, there seems to be a lot more services that are offering help desk representative and secretarial services as well. Again, with these services you will be doing work remotely for an employer that may be situated some distance from you. In a secretarial service you will provide a variety of services including answering telephones from your home location, typing, desk top publishing and payroll. As a customer service representative, you will be briefed by the employer on their product or their services. Your duties will include answering calls from customers on your home telephone, answering on line requests for information. Theses are a few examples of the telcommuting work opportunities. The common theme behind telecommuting is that you will be paid per hour for your work as opposed to a per project basis. The best way to for you to find these types of jobs would be to do a search on the internet under telecommuting. If this search yeilds fruitless, you may consider looking at popular job boards such as Kaboo.org, Craigslist.com, Hotjobs.com, and Careerbuilder. There is an option in their search for telecommute positions. Malka Maxwell is an Independent Consultant and author of “How To Get Ahead With Resumes (revised)”.
